About this role

As a member of the Surveillance and Analysis team, you will apply your expertise in the wholesale electricity markets to the critical work of the market monitor. You will provide valuable insight to the team by applying economic principles in your daily monitoring of market outcomes and participant behavior. Working with large and complex data, you will perform in-depth empirical analyses on market performance and report on challenging electricity market issues for both internal and external stakeholders. You will also play a valuable role in mentoring early career staff and leading projects from inception to delivering the final product.

This role is a part of the Internal Market Monitoring (IMM) group at ISO New England. Market monitoring is responsible for protecting both consumers and market participants in the wholesale electricity markets by mitigating the impacts of uncompetitive bidding, identifying and reporting market design issues and market manipulation, and evaluating market performance. In fulfilling this role, we rely on a multidisciplinary team with expertise in economics, financial analysis, engineering, data science and law.

Design, develop and run screening tools to identify market performance issues, non-compliance with market rules and uncompetitive behavior

Identify and source relevant data through research and proactive engagement with colleagues

Evaluate how the market is performing under current design and rules and identify potential enhancements to address gaps

Write clear and insightful content, collaborate with colleagues to make connections between report sectionsInvestigationsIdentify market outcomes and market participant behavior that warrants further investigation and analysis

Conduct investigations and make referrals to the federal energy regulatorMentoring team membersWhat we are looking forMaster’s Degree in Economics, Finance, Applied Math, or related field, and 5+ years of relevant experience required. A Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Finance, Applied Math, or related field, and additional years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a Master’s Degree.

Extensive experience in wholesale electricity markets and the electric industry, to include understanding the associated auction and settlement design features

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Ability to communicate complex findings and ideas in plain language at an executive, board member, or regulator level

Experience in applying strong quantitative and data analysis skills to electricity market problems, with an emphasis on leveraging large and complex data using SAS or a similar programming language

Ability to conduct forensic-like investigations of market outcomes and participant behavior

Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and collaboratively with others in a team environment

The expected salary range for this position is $130,000 - $170,000 per year. This role is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, comprehensive health insurance (medical, dental and vision), flexible spending and health savings accounts, a 401(k) plan with generous employer contributions and a student debt benefit, life and AD&D insurance, disability insurance, critical illness and hospital indemnity benefits, paid time off, paid leave, a wellness program, an employee assistance program and other great company perks.
